American Red Cross of NEPA Announces 2017 Hero Awards

The American Red Cross of Northeastern Pennsylvania is celebrating 100 years, and in doing so, hosting a banquet to honor local heroes right in our own backyards. According to the press release, the annual event honors both “trained heroes together with Good Samaritans, as nominated by their peers and the community.”

DALLAS CURBSIDE YARD WASTE COLLECTION: The Dallas Borough Road Department will begin weekly curbside yard waste collection beginning the week of May 8, weather permitting. The weekly collection schedule will begin following the conclusion of the Dallas Borough spring cleanup scheduled for the week of May 1-6.

Homeless man admits to sexually assaulting girl, 14, near Freeland park

A homeless man pleaded guilty Friday to charges he sexually assaulted a 14-year-old girl last summer in a tree house near a wooded area in Freeland. Joseph Maurer, 20, entered the plea in Luzerne County Court to one felony count each of statutory sexual assault and corruption of minors.

Freezing Rain, Sleet Turns Roads in Freeland into Slushy Mess

In the higher elevation in Luzerne County, freezing rain and sleet fell on Monday, turning the streets into slushy, wet messes. Plenty of PennDOT trucks were out and about in Freeland, but folks said they were still having a rough time getting around.

Taxpayers in Buck Township will pay less in local income taxes in 2017. The township lowered tax rates from 0.1212 to 0.1 mills.

PNC Bank is closing two branches in Luzerne County, in Wyoming and Freeland, as more people are using electronic banking alternatives. Its branch at 1000 Wyoming Ave., Wyoming, will close on Friday, Nov. 18, at 3 p.m. and will be combined into a branch at 14 N. Main St., Plains Township, according to a written notice from Mike Brundage, market manager.

Bail sought for man granted new trial in 1991 slaying

A federal public defender is seeking bail for a western Pennsylvania man granted a new trial in his ex-wife's slaying a quarter-century ago. Kevin Charles Siehl, now 60, was sentenced to life in prison in the July 1991 slaying of Christine Siehl, who was found stabbed to death in a bathtub with the shower still running.

The Northeast Variety Band has 20 musicians playing for parades and sit-down concerts, and one musician stood out with his great trumpet playing. Michael F. DeMelfi joined our band about two years ago and soon had his grandson, Nicholas Hecknote, playing his trumpet alongside him.

As the people of Hazleton congregated downtown for the 38th annual Funfest parade, they truly gave meaning to this year's theme: “CommUNITY Superheroes.” As the parade – making its trek along the Broad Street route – began to get underway at 2:30 p.m., hundreds gathered to celebrate the ever-evolving blended community that Hazleton has grown into since Funfest's inception.

Philip Voystock raised the flag at the first Anthracite Heritage Day celebration in Miners' Memorial Park on a sunny Saturday morning. More than 60 years ago, Voystock toiled in near-darkness in a coal mine not far from the park, built on the grounds of the former Huber Breaker, off South Main Street in Ashley.
